Quick answer

A heavy, full stomach can ruin sleep. Learn what to do at night, how long to wait before lying down, and how to avoid it next time.

Plan your night

Enter the time it ended and your alarm. The planner adds the wait you choose before lying down and shows the alarm times that end a sleep cycle.

What to do tonight

  • Stay upright for a while, and walk slowly for 10 to 15 minutes if you can.
  • Sip warm water instead of drinking a lot at once.
  • Loosen your clothes and avoid lying flat immediately.
  • Raise your head and chest with pillows when you go to bed, and try the left side.
  • Do not eat a second time. Give the stomach a rest.
  • Keep the room cool, dark and quiet. See how temperature affects sleep.

Most mild indigestion settles within a few hours. If you have burning, read the acid reflux guide and sleeping with acidity.

Why the stomach feels heavy

A large meal stretches the stomach and can take several hours to empty, more if it is high in fat. Eating quickly, swallowing air and drinking fizzy drinks increase pressure. Lying down removes the help of gravity. Stress and late hours slow digestion further. Together these make the belly feel tight and the mind restless.

How long meals may take to settle

Rough guide for when to lie down
MealSuggested wait before lying flat
Light snackAbout 1 hour
Normal dinnerAbout 2 to 3 hours
Large or very rich meal3 hours or more
Very spicy or oily meal3 hours or more, raise your head

These are common guides, not rules. Everyone digests at a different speed. Use the late dinner sleep calculator for a personal estimate.

How to prevent it next time

  1. Eat dinner earlier, about 2 to 3 hours before lights out.
  2. Make dinner the smaller meal of the day if you can.
  3. Eat slowly and stop when you feel satisfied.
  4. Reduce fried, very spicy or very sweet foods late at night.
  5. Limit fizzy drinks and strong tea or coffee in the evening.
  6. Walk for 10 to 15 minutes after dinner.
  7. Keep a steady bedtime using the bedtime calculator.

When to get medical help

Warning signs

Do not wait for sleep if you have repeated vomiting, vomit with blood or a coffee ground look, severe or worsening stomach pain, chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, a high fever, confusion, signs of dehydration such as very dark urine, dizziness or no urination for many hours, or if you cannot keep fluids down. Pregnant women, older adults, young children and people with long term conditions should get advice sooner. This page is general education and not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my stomach so heavy at night?

A large or late meal takes a long time to empty, and lying flat makes fullness and reflux worse.

Should I sleep on my left or right side?

The left side is often more comfortable with reflux or fullness. Some studies support it.

Can indigestion wake me at night?

Yes. Reflux, gas and fullness can cause waking. Earlier, lighter dinners help.

Do antacids help?

Some people use them, but ask a pharmacist or doctor about what suits you.

When is indigestion serious?

If it is severe, with chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools or weight loss, get medical help.

Is 8 hours too much sleep?

Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.

How do I move my bedtime earlier?

Shift it by 15 to 30 minutes every two or three days while keeping the wake time fixed, get bright light after waking and dim lights for an hour before bed.

Will waking at the end of a cycle remove morning grogginess?

It can help some people, because waking from light sleep is usually easier than waking from deep sleep. The effect is not guaranteed. Grogginess, known as sleep inertia, usually fades within 15 to 30 minutes and also depends on how much sleep you had and when you wake in your body clock.
