Late night recovery calculator

Use this for any late meal, event or work finish. Enter when it ended, how long you want to wait before lying down and your alarm time.

How to use the result

The wait before lying down matters most after a large meal. Two to three hours is a common guide. After a long work day, a wait of one hour gives time to eat lightly, wash up and wind down. The result shows the time you lie down, how many full 90 minute cycles fit before the alarm, and alarm times that end a cycle.

If the result is short of 7 hours, keep the wake time within an hour of normal, nap briefly before 3 PM and plan an earlier night tomorrow. See the late night sleep recovery guide for situation pages.

Frequently asked questions

What does wait before lying down mean?

It is the time between finishing your meal or activity and lying down to sleep.

How long should I wait after a big meal?

Two to three hours is common guidance before lying flat.

Why does the result show cycles?

Sleep moves in cycles of about 90 minutes. Waking at the end of one may feel easier.

What if the result is under 7 hours?

Keep the alarm near normal, nap briefly and sleep earlier the next night.

How long does it take to recover from sleep debt?

There is no single number. Small debts of a few hours often improve within days of adequate sleep, while larger long term debts take longer. Consistency matters more than one heroic long sleep.

Is 8 hours too much sleep?

Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.

Does a consistent sleep schedule really matter?

Yes. A regular sleep and wake time supports your body clock, which can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up. Large gaps between weekday and weekend times can leave you feeling jet lagged on Monday.

Do sleep trackers show my real sleep cycles?

Consumer trackers estimate sleep stages from movement and heart rate, so they are less precise than a sleep lab. Use them to spot trends in duration and consistency rather than to judge a single night.
