What the meal curfew calculator does

Enter the time you finished eating, your bedtime and the kind of meal. The calculator works out the gap, compares it with a suggested gap of two, three or four hours and tells you the latest time you can finish eating.

The two and three hour figures follow the guidance in the American College of Gastroenterology guideline for people with night time reflux. The four hour figure for heavy meals is a cautious rule of thumb that many clinicians use, not a figure from the guideline.

Why timing matters

When you lie flat, stomach contents can flow back into the oesophagus more easily. A full stomach makes this more likely. The ACG guideline recommends avoiding meals within two to three hours of bedtime for patients with nocturnal reflux, raising the head of the bed and sleeping on the left side.

These steps are low risk and worth trying. Weight loss in people with overweight also helps, and a doctor can advise on medicines.

Common trigger foods

  • Large, fatty or fried meals
  • Spicy food
  • Chocolate, mint and tomato based dishes for some people
  • Alcohol and late coffee
  • Fizzy drinks

Seven steps for a calmer night

  1. Finish eating at least two to three hours before bed.
  2. Keep dinner lighter and earlier on busy days.
  3. Raise the head of the bed by about 15 to 20 cm, using a wedge or blocks, not extra pillows.
  4. Sleep on your left side.
  5. Avoid tight clothing at the waist.
  6. Do not smoke close to bedtime. See the nicotine bedtime estimator.
  7. Keep alcohol well away from bed.

If you wake with a burning chest or sour taste

Sit up, sip water and avoid lying flat for a while. Do not eat again. If it happens often, keep a note of the meal and time and talk to a doctor. Read can't sleep with heartburn, fix sleep with acid reflux and sleep with acidity for more.

When you must eat late

Shift workers and people with late jobs cannot always eat early. Choose a small meal with lean protein and complex carbohydrate, avoid fat and spice, and stay upright for as long as you can. Use the shift worker rotation adjuster to plan sleep around your meals.

Hunger at bedtime

Going to bed very hungry can also keep you awake. A small snack such as a banana, yoghurt or a slice of toast is fine for most people about an hour before bed. For ideas, see what to eat for better sleep.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you have heartburn more than twice a week, trouble swallowing, vomiting, black stools, unexplained weight loss or chest pain. Chest pain can be a heart problem, so seek urgent help if it is severe or comes with breathlessness or sweating.

A worked example

You finish a normal dinner at 9 PM and go to bed at 11 PM. That is a two hour gap, while the guide for a normal meal is three hours, so the calculator tells you to finish by 8 PM or move bedtime later. If it was a light snack, two hours is enough.

For a heavy, fatty or spicy meal, the suggested gap rises to four hours. This is a cautious rule, so adjust it to your own symptoms.

Keep a two week food and symptom diary

Write what you ate, the time, your bedtime and any heartburn. Patterns show up quickly, such as spicy dishes on Friday or late coffee. Bring the diary to your doctor if symptoms continue.

Small changes often work: smaller portions, an earlier dinner, less alcohol and a raised bed head. Do not ignore ongoing symptoms, because long term reflux can need treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait to sleep after eating? ›

At least two to three hours is the usual advice, especially if you get heartburn.

Is it bad to eat right before bed? ›

A big meal close to bedtime can trigger reflux and disturb sleep. A small snack is usually fine.

Which side is best for acid reflux? ›

Sleeping on the left side may reduce reflux for some people.

Do extra pillows help reflux? ›

Extra pillows bend the neck. A wedge or raised bed head lifts the whole upper body and works better.

Does late eating cause weight gain? ›

Late eating itself is not proven to cause it, but late night snacking can raise total calories.

Is this calculator medical advice? ›

No. It is a simple guide. See a doctor for frequent symptoms.
