Enter your exam start time and how early you need to wake up to eat, get ready and travel. The planner works backwards to a lights out time, a caffeine cutoff and a time to stop revising.
Why sleep the night before an exam matters
Memory consolidation, attention and mood all depend on sleep. Most of the revision you did during the week is stored during sleep, so cutting the night before the exam to cram a few extra pages usually costs more than it gives. A steady wake time in the days before the exam matters as much as the exam night itself.
Exam nerves often lengthen the time it takes to fall asleep, so the planner defaults to 30 minutes. If you usually fall asleep quickly, choose a shorter value.
A simple plan for the week of the exam
- Fix your wake time to the exam day wake time at least three days before.
- Keep revision sessions to daytime and early evening.
- Stop caffeine about 9 hours before lights out. Caffeine has a half life of roughly 5 to 6 hours.
- Write tomorrow's worries on paper, then close the notebook.
- If you cannot sleep, get out of bed for a few minutes in dim light rather than checking the clock.

Frequently asked questions
How much sleep should I get before an exam?
Aim for your normal full night. Adults need 7 or more hours, and teenagers need 8 to 10 hours.
Is it better to stay up and study or sleep?
For most people sleep is the better choice. Sleep supports memory and attention, and the last hour of cramming adds little.
What if I cannot fall asleep the night before an exam?
Keep your wake time, avoid checking the clock, and try a calm routine. One poor night is usually survivable, and worrying about it tends to make it worse.
When should I stop drinking coffee before an exam?
A common guide is 8 to 10 hours before lights out, and earlier if you are sensitive to caffeine.
How many hours should students sleep?
Teens are advised 8 to 10 hours and adults at least 7. Exam season tempts students to cut sleep, but reduced sleep can lower attention and recall.
Is 8 hours too much sleep?
Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.
Does a consistent sleep schedule really matter?
Yes. A regular sleep and wake time supports your body clock, which can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up. Large gaps between weekday and weekend times can leave you feeling jet lagged on Monday.
Do sleep trackers show my real sleep cycles?
Consumer trackers estimate sleep stages from movement and heart rate, so they are less precise than a sleep lab. Use them to spot trends in duration and consistency rather than to judge a single night.
