Sleep now calculator

Choose your lights out time, or use the current time on your device. The calculator adds your time to fall asleep and counts forward in 90 minute cycles.

How the sleep now calculator works

If you go to sleep right now, the best time to wake up is when a sleep cycle ends. The tool adds 15 minutes for falling asleep by default, then adds blocks of 90 minutes. The result lists the alarm time for 3, 4, 5 and 6 cycles. Five cycles is 7.5 hours and suits most adults. Six cycles is 9 hours and suits teenagers or recovery nights.

The times are estimates. Real cycles vary from person to person, so if you keep waking groggy at a recommended time, try an alarm 15 to 20 minutes earlier or later for a week and see which feels better.

What to do when it is already late

If you are going to bed very late, protect your wake time where possible and accept a shorter night rather than sleeping in by several hours. A short night followed by a normal wake time, morning light and an earlier bedtime the next evening usually recovers faster than a long sleep in. For regular late nights, use the bedtime calculator to work backward from the alarm you actually need.

Frequently asked questions

If I go to sleep now, what time should I wake up?

Add about 15 minutes to fall asleep, then add 90 minute cycles. Five cycles means waking 7 hours 45 minutes after lights out, and six cycles means 9 hours 15 minutes after.

How long should I sleep if I go to bed now?

Aim for at least 7 hours as an adult, which is about 5 cycles. Teenagers should aim for 8 to 10 hours.

Is a 4 hour or 6 hour sleep enough?

Six hours is below the 7 hours recommended for adults and 4 hours is well below it. Use short nights only occasionally and plan extra sleep afterward.

Does the sleep now calculator work for naps?

For a nap, use the nap calculator. A 10 to 20 minute nap or a full 90 minute nap usually leaves you less groggy than a nap of about 30 to 45 minutes.

Is 8 hours too much sleep?

Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.

How do I move my bedtime earlier?

Shift it by 15 to 30 minutes every two or three days while keeping the wake time fixed, get bright light after waking and dim lights for an hour before bed.

What happens in one sleep cycle?

A cycle moves through lighter NREM sleep (N1 and N2), deep slow wave sleep (N3) and then REM sleep. Early cycles contain more deep sleep, while later cycles contain more REM, which is why the last hours before waking are valuable for dreaming and memory processing.

Why am I still tired after 8 or 9 hours of sleep?

Common reasons include irregular sleep times, alcohol or late caffeine, a warm or noisy room, waking at the wrong point in a cycle, or sleep that is fragmented. Loud snoring with breathing pauses, or sleepiness that affects driving or work, should be checked by a doctor.
