What the calorie burn calculator does

Type your weight and hours of sleep. The calculator uses a value of about 0.95 MET, the figure assigned to sleeping in the Compendium of Physical Activities, to estimate calories used overnight. It also shows a range, because metabolism differs from person to person.

One MET is roughly one calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour at rest. A 70 kg person who sleeps 7.5 hours uses about 500 calories.

How your body uses energy overnight

Your brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys keep working while you sleep, so you burn energy all night. The rate drops a little in deep sleep and rises in REM sleep, when the brain is active. Overall, sleeping uses a little less energy than lying awake and quietly.

Because the numbers are close, sleeping longer does not give you a useful calorie boost. A few extra minutes of walking burn as much as another hour in bed.

Can you lose weight by sleeping more?

Not directly. The calories burned in extra sleep are small. But sleep does affect weight through appetite and behaviour. Tasali and colleagues ran a randomised trial in adults who habitually slept under 6.5 hours. Those who extended sleep by about an hour cut their calorie intake by roughly 270 calories a day compared with controls.

So sleep does not burn the weight off. It helps you eat less, mainly by calming hunger and late night snacking. See the sleep and weight loss calculator for planning.

Sleep, hunger and cravings

Short sleep tends to raise ghrelin, a hunger hormone, and lower leptin, which signals fullness. Tired people also choose higher calorie food and snack more at night, because the brain's reward centres respond more to food.

If you are trying to manage weight, aim for a regular 7 to 9 hours first. Then add steady daily movement and a food plan that suits you.

Habits that help weight and sleep together

  • Keep a regular bedtime and wake time
  • Stop eating a large meal 2 to 3 hours before bed
  • Get daylight and a walk in the morning
  • Cut caffeine after midday if it disturbs your sleep
  • Limit alcohol, which adds calories and fragments sleep
  • Strength training and aerobic activity both improve sleep

Limits of the estimate

The estimate cannot account for muscle mass, age, hormones, medicines or illness. Fitness watches that report sleep calories are also rough. Use the figure as an educational number, not as a basis for a diet.

If you are managing a medical condition or an eating disorder, work with a qualified clinician rather than a calculator.

Worked examples

A person of 150 pounds, which is 68 kg, sleeping 8 hours burns about 0.95 times 68 times 8, which is 517 calories. A person of 200 pounds, 91 kg, sleeping 7 hours burns about 605 calories. Heavier people burn more because they have more tissue to run.

These numbers are close to what you would use lying still awake, so the idea that sleep is a big calorie burner is a myth.

Eating for better sleep and weight

  • Eat regular meals and avoid skipping breakfast
  • Choose fibre, vegetables and lean protein, which keep you full
  • Keep large meals at least two to three hours from bed
  • Limit sugar and highly processed snacks in the evening
  • Drink water through the day and less in the last hour
  • Try tart cherries, kiwi or a small banana if you want a pre bed snack

Shift work, sleep and weight

People who work nights face a higher risk of weight gain, partly from eating at odd hours and partly from disrupted body clocks. Plan simple, protein rich meals on shift, avoid heavy food during the biological night and protect your daytime sleep with a dark room.

The shift worker rotation adjuster can help you set sleep windows.

A note on health goals

This calculator is for general learning. If you want to lose weight, a registered dietitian or doctor can help you build a safe plan. If you are worried about your eating habits, speak with a healthcare professional rather than counting calories on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories do you burn sleeping? ›

About 0.9 to 1 calorie per kilogram per hour, so around 450 to 500 for a 70 kg adult over 7.5 hours.

Do you burn more calories in REM sleep? ›

Brain energy use rises in REM, but the total change is small.

Can I lose weight by sleeping more? ›

Not directly, but longer sleep in short sleepers is linked with eating less.

Does sleeping on an empty stomach burn fat? ›

No. Your body uses a mix of fuels, and total energy balance matters.

Does room temperature change calorie burn? ›

Very cold or hot rooms raise energy use slightly but harm sleep.

What is a MET? ›

A unit of energy use, where 1 MET is resting quietly.
