What the growth hormone timer does
You enter the time you plan to go to bed, how long you usually take to fall asleep and your age group. The timer estimates when your first deep sleep block begins and when it usually ends, and when your second cycle starts.
It does not measure hormones. It uses the well known pattern that slow wave sleep is front loaded, which means the first two or three sleep cycles hold most of your deep sleep. Protecting those hours is the practical goal.
What the research shows
Growth hormone is released in pulses through the day, and the biggest pulse in most healthy adults occurs soon after sleep begins, in step with slow wave sleep. Van Cauter, Leproult and Plat studied healthy men across the lifespan and found that the fall in slow wave sleep with age was closely linked to lower growth hormone levels at night.
This is an association in men, not proof that more deep sleep will build more muscle. The evidence does not support the idea that you can push growth hormone far above your normal range through sleep tricks. The sensible reading is simple: do not lose the early deep sleep that your body already makes.
Why the first three hours matter
Sleep follows cycles of about 90 minutes. Early cycles contain long stretches of deep sleep, while later cycles hold more REM sleep. That is why a late bedtime or an early alarm does not shorten the night evenly. Cutting the start removes deep sleep, and cutting the end removes REM sleep.
If you want to see the cycle layout, open the sleep cycle visualizer. For a deeper look at stages, read sleep cycles and the stages of sleep.
Deep sleep changes with age
Young adults can spend a fifth of the night in deep sleep. By middle age the share is lower, and many people over 50 get far less. This is a normal part of ageing, not a sign of disease on its own.
The timer therefore gives a shorter window to older adults. If you are older, the aim is not to recover youthful deep sleep but to keep sleep consolidated, regular and free of alcohol and late caffeine. See sleep needs of older adults.
Seven ways to protect your deep sleep
- Keep the same bedtime and wake time every day, including weekends.
- Finish hard exercise at least three hours before bed.
- Avoid alcohol in the evening, since it can fragment sleep and cut REM later in the night.
- Stop caffeine early. Use the caffeine half life calculator.
- Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet. Check it with the bedroom temperature gauge.
- Eat your last large meal two to three hours before bed.
- Treat loud snoring or breathing pauses with a doctor visit, because they can break deep sleep.
Sleep, training and muscle
Muscle is built by training, protein and recovery. Sleep supports recovery in several ways, including hormone release, tissue repair and the clearing of fatigue. People who sleep poorly often train worse and recover slower. Read more in does sleep help muscle growth and plan the evening with the post workout sleep optimizer.
Banks and Dinges describe how restricting sleep harms performance and mood over several days, which is the opposite of what a training block needs.
A word on growth hormone supplements
Over the counter products that claim to raise growth hormone are not a substitute for sleep and are not proven to do so safely. Injected growth hormone is a prescription medicine for diagnosed deficiency and is banned in many sports. Do not use it for sleep or muscle goals. A doctor can test your hormones if you have symptoms.
What this timer cannot tell you
It cannot see inside your sleep. Some nights you fall asleep slowly, some nights you wake, and some nights the deep block is short. Wearables estimate stages with limited accuracy, as discussed in how accurate sleep trackers are. Use the window as a planning guide and judge your sleep by how you feel and function.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does growth hormone peak during sleep? ›
In most healthy adults the largest nightly pulse comes soon after sleep starts, during the first period of slow wave sleep.
How many hours of deep sleep do I need? ›
There is no exact number. Healthy young adults often spend 15 to 25 percent of the night in deep sleep, and the share falls with age.
Can I increase growth hormone with sleep? ›
You can avoid losing it by sleeping long enough and regularly. There is no proven sleep trick that raises it far above your normal range.
Does a nap give me growth hormone? ›
Short naps rarely reach deep sleep. A nap of around 90 minutes can include it, but it does not replace night sleep.
Does alcohol before bed hurt deep sleep? ›
Alcohol may help you fall asleep but tends to fragment sleep and reduce REM sleep later in the night.
Is this timer medical advice? ›
No. It is an educational estimate. See a doctor for hormone concerns.
