When does daylight saving time end in the USA in 2026?

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 2:00 am local time. Clocks fall back to 1:00 am, and the USA returns to standard time.

Federal law sets the rule. Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. In 2026 those dates were 8 March and 1 November. The NIST overview explains the rule. Our four country guide compares it with Europe.

Each time zone changes at 2:00 am its own time. The change rolls from east to west over four hours across the continental USA. If you live in New York, your 2:00 am arrives before Los Angeles gets its 2:00 am.

Which US states and territories do not change their clocks?

Hawaii stays on standard time all year. Most of Arizona does too, except the Navajo Nation, which follows daylight saving time. US territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands also stay put.

This matters for work. In summer, Arizona matches Pacific time. In winter it matches Mountain time. Flights to and from Phoenix show different times from the clock on your wall, which is why a Phoenix to Denver trip looks one hour longer or shorter.

How does the fall back change affect US sleep and body clocks?

Your body clock follows light, not the clock on the wall. When the dial moves back one hour, you may wake early, feel sleepy at the new bedtime and want breakfast sooner. Most healthy adults adapt within about a week.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls for the USA to eliminate seasonal time changes and move to permanent standard time. It says standard time fits human circadian biology best. Its position appeared in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2024.

Here is my honest view. The extra hour feels like free sleep, but it only works if you keep your bedtime. Do not stay up late on Saturday night. Wake at your usual time on Sunday and get outside in daylight.

Use the bedtime calculator on our homepage to count back from your wake up time in 90 minute cycles. Early riser? Read the guide to the best bedtime for a 5:30 am wake up.

How do the US dates compare with Europe and Canada?

Europe changed on 25 October. The USA and Canada follow on 1 November. For one week London is four hours ahead of New York instead of five. See the UK, Germany and Canada guides for local detail.

The same quirk returns in spring 2027. The USA and Canada go forward on 14 March. Europe follows on 28 March. For two weeks the gap is one hour smaller.

How does the change affect work, markets and meetings?

The New York stock market opens at 9:30 am Eastern. London normally sees that at 2:30 pm. For the week from 25 to 31 October 2026 it opens at 1:30 pm London time. After 1 November it returns to 2:30 pm.

Calendar tools usually handle the change, but recurring meetings across the Atlantic can still land an hour off. Check each invite's time zone this week. Anyone running scheduled software jobs should test before the repeated hour between 1:00 and 2:00 am.

Does the end of daylight saving time disturb flight schedules?

Flights keep the same duration, but printed local times move. Airlines switch to a winter schedule on the last Sunday of October, so many transatlantic flights show new times this week.

Cranky Flier explains that the mismatch between US and European dates tightens connections. Busy airports such as Heathrow and Frankfurt struggle to change landing slots, so airlines often retime their US flights instead.

Open your airline app 48 hours ahead. Add 30 minutes to tight connections. Check ground transport, because trains, buses and shuttles use the new time. Plan your first night of sleep around the destination clock.

How does the time change affect medication and medical care?

For most medicines, one hour makes no meaningful difference. For insulin, blood thinners, seizure medicine and thyroid tablets, ask your pharmacist or doctor how to handle the change.

Insulin pumps are the best documented concern. A 2014 study in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, covered by Pharmacy Times, found that pumps do not adjust on their own. A wrong am or pm setting can affect mealtime and background doses. Check your pump clock the day the clocks change.

Keep a written medication log. Set alarms by interval, such as every 12 hours, when your doctor says the gap matters. Never double a dose. Telehealth and clinic times use local time, and fasting tests feel an hour longer. This is general information, not medical advice.

What does one hour change in nature and on the road?

The sun does not follow our clocks. Daylight length follows the season, and the change only moves sunrise and sunset on the dial. Many northern cities now see sunset before 5 pm.

Wildlife on roads shows the effect clearly. A University of Washington study published in Current Biology in 2022 used data from 23 states between 2013 and 2019. It found deer vehicle collisions rose by an average of about 16 percent in the weeks after the fall change. Science News summarised the study. Deer are active at dusk, and the evening commute now falls in their window.

Drive slowly at dusk in the Midwest, the Northeast and the Pacific Northwest. Pets follow feeding times, not clocks, so shift meals by 15 minutes a day. Plants follow day length and temperature, so gardens notice nothing.

Will the USA stop changing the clocks?

The Sunshine Protection Act would make daylight saving time permanent, but it has not become law. The Senate passed a version in 2022, and the House did not act. The AASM prefers permanent standard time instead. States can choose permanent standard time, as Hawaii and Arizona did, but permanent daylight time needs Congress.

Expect two changes a year through 2028. The next ones are 14 March 2027 and 7 November 2027.

How can you adjust in five days after the fall back?

Keep your bedtime steady, get daylight early and keep a fixed wake time.

  1. Day 1: Keep your normal bedtime by the new clock and go outside before 10 am.
  2. Day 2: Stop caffeine by early afternoon.
  3. Day 3: Dim lights an hour before bed.
  4. Day 4: Wake at the same time as yesterday.
  5. Day 5: Take a lunch walk and review how you feel.

When does daylight saving time return in 2027 and 2028?

Daylight saving time returns at 2:00 am on Sunday 14 March 2027. It ends again on Sunday 7 November 2027. In 2028 it begins on Sunday 12 March and ends on Sunday 5 November. See the Time and Date list for 2027. Spring costs one hour of sleep, so start moving bedtime earlier a few days before.
