When did the Zeitumstellung happen in Germany in 2026?
Germany switched to winter time on Sunday 25 October 2026. Mitteleuropäische Sommerzeit (MESZ) ended at 3:00 am, and the clock moved back to 2:00 am Mitteleuropäische Zeit (MEZ).
The rule is the last Sunday in October for winter time and the last Sunday in March for summer time. Austria, Poland, France and most of the EU follow the same days. The UK also moved on 25 October, so see our UK guide if you travel between the two. The Time and Date Germany page lists the schedule.
Berlin has one time zone, so every German city changes at the same moment. That makes planning easy compared with the USA or Canada.
Pick your bedtime in seconds with the free bedtime calculator or set the alarm with the wake up calculator. Both count full 90 minute cycles, so you wake rested after the clocks move.
What changes on your clocks, and what updates by itself?
Phones, laptops, smart TVs and radio controlled clocks update without help. In Germany, many wall and desk clocks listen to the DCF77 time signal sent from a transmitter near Frankfurt. They switch on their own.
Ovens, microwaves, older car clocks and plug in timers still need you. Check the heating controller too, because a wrong time means a late start on a cold morning. The hour from 2:00 to 3:00 am happens twice in autumn, so night shift staff work an extra hour. Ask your employer how it is paid.
How does the Zeitumstellung affect sleep and your body clock?
Your body clock follows light, not the dial. When Germany moves back one hour, you may wake early, feel sleepy at the new bedtime and feel hungry at odd times. Most healthy adults adjust within about a week.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says seasonal changes carry potential harms and favours permanent standard time, which it says fits circadian biology best. Germany has not chosen a side yet.
My honest take is simple. Do not use the extra hour to stay up. Keep your normal bedtime by the new clock, and wake at the same time every day.
If you want an exact bedtime, try our bedtime calculator. It counts 90 minute sleep cycles back from your wake up time.
How does Germany compare with the UK, the USA and Canada?
Germany and the UK changed on the same day. The USA and Canada follow on 1 November 2026. For one week, Berlin is five hours ahead of New York instead of six. The gap returns to six hours on 1 November.
Pakistan and Singapore do not change clocks, so Berlin gets one hour closer to Karachi in winter. See our four country comparison for the full table.
| Period | London to New York | Berlin to New York | London to Toronto | London to Karachi | London to Singapore |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (UK on BST, US on EDT) | 5 hours | 6 hours | 5 hours | 4 hours | 7 hours |
| 25 Oct to 31 Oct 2026 (UK on GMT, US still on EDT) | 4 hours | 5 hours | 4 hours | 5 hours | 8 hours |
| From 1 Nov 2026 (UK on GMT, US on EST) | 5 hours | 6 hours | 5 hours | 5 hours | 8 hours |
| 14 Mar to 27 Mar 2027 (US on EDT, UK still on GMT) | 4 hours | 5 hours | 4 hours | 5 hours | 8 hours |
Does the Zeitumstellung disturb flights from Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin?
Flights do not change length. Only the printed local time moves. Airlines also begin their winter schedule on the last Sunday in October, so many departures from Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin show different times than in summer.
Cranky Flier notes that busy European hubs struggle to move their landing slots, so airlines often retime their American flights instead. A Frankfurt to New York flight can arrive an hour earlier or later on the clock this week.
Check the airline app 48 hours before you fly. Leave extra time for connections at Frankfurt. Check Deutsche Bahn and airport transfer bookings too, since ground timetables follow the new time.
How does the Zeitumstellung affect medication and doctor visits?
For most medicines, an hour does not matter. For insulin, blood thinners, epilepsy medicine and thyroid tablets, ask your Apotheke or doctor how to handle the change.
Insulin pumps need a manual check. Pharmacy Times reports that pumps do not adjust on their own, and a wrong am or pm setting can affect doses. Check the pump on the day.
Keep a written log. Use alarms set by interval, such as every 12 hours, if your doctor says the gap matters. Never double a dose. Appointment letters show local time, so no conversion is needed, but fasting tests feel an hour longer. This is general information, not medical advice.
What does one hour change in nature and daylight in Germany?
The sun ignores our clocks. Only the label on sunrise and sunset shifts. Berlin now sees sunrise near 7 am and sunset before 5 pm, and daylight keeps shrinking a few minutes each day into December.
The clearest effect is on the roads. A University of Washington study in Current Biology found about 16 percent more deer vehicle collisions after the autumn change in the USA. Science News explains the study. The data are American, yet German roads share the same dusk risk. Deer and wild boar are active at dusk, and the evening commute now falls in the dark. Slow down near forests in Bavaria, Brandenburg and the Black Forest.
Pets and farm animals follow feeding times, not clocks. Shift meals by 15 minutes a day.
Will Germany stop changing the clocks?
In 2019 the European Parliament voted to end seasonal changes, yet EU governments never agreed on a common rule. Neighbouring countries do not want different times, because it would cause confusion at borders, on trains and for shipping.
Germany first used summer time in 1916 and brought it back in 1980. Until member states agree, expect the next change on Sunday 28 March 2027.
How do you adjust to winter time in five days?
Shift your bedtime by 15 minutes a night, get morning daylight and keep a fixed wake time.
- Day 1: Keep your normal bedtime by the new clock and go outside before 10 am.
- Day 2: Stop caffeine by early afternoon.
- Day 3: Dim lights an hour before bed.
- Day 4: Wake at the same time as yesterday.
- Day 5: Take a lunch walk and review how you feel.
When does the Zeitumstellung happen in 2027 and 2028?
Summer time returns on Sunday 28 March 2027, when 2:00 am becomes 3:00 am. Winter time returns on Sunday 31 October 2027. In 2028 the dates are Sunday 26 March and Sunday 29 October. Compare with the Time and Date list. Spring costs one hour of sleep, so go to bed 15 minutes earlier for several nights before.
