Quick answer

Ramadan in autumn means shorter days, earlier Iftar and often a clock change. Plan your night block, Fajr rest and nap with a free Ramadan sleep calculator.

Autumn Ramadan sleep calculator

Enter the Fajr time, the time Taraweeh ends and when work or school starts. The calculator builds a night block, a Fajr block and an optional nap, and checks the total against 7 hours. The default times are examples, so replace them with your local timetable.

What changes in a autumn Ramadan

In the northern hemisphere, days shorten through autumn, so Fajr gets later and Iftar earlier as Ramadan goes on. This makes the fasting day shorter each week and the second block after Fajr slightly longer. Countries that use daylight saving time move the clocks back, which gives an extra hour on one night.

  • Fasting gets shorter as the month goes on.
  • Fajr moves later, so the Suhoor wake up gets easier.
  • A clock change can give you an extra hour, but it can also confuse your body clock.
  • Mornings become darker, so use lights and step outside for daylight.
  • Temperatures fall, so blankets and warm rooms matter.

Ramadan moves about 10 to 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year, so it passes through every season over roughly 33 years. The right plan depends on where you live and on your local prayer times.

A sample day

The example uses a Fajr time of 5:00 AM, Taraweeh ending at 9:45 PM and work at 9:00 AM. It includes 30 minutes to wind down after Taraweeh and waking 45 minutes before Fajr for Suhoor.

Example autumn Ramadan day (illustrative times)
BlockFromToLength
Night block10:15 PM4:15 AM6 h 00 min
Fajr block5:30 AM8:00 AM2 h 30 min
Afternoon napAfter Dhuhr30 min
Total9 h 00 min

Your own numbers will differ. The pattern stays the same: one solid night block, a short second block after Fajr and a nap if you can.

Autumn Ramadan sleep tips

  • Re check prayer times each week and run the calculator again.
  • Use the extra hour from the clock change to go to bed a bit earlier, not later.
  • Keep a steady wake time.
  • Open curtains at once after waking and get outside light.
  • Keep a cool bedroom with warm bedding.

If you live in the other hemisphere

In the southern hemisphere the same months are spring. See the spring Ramadan page.

Health and fasting

Fasting is not suitable for everyone. If you have diabetes, are pregnant, breastfeeding, take regular medicine or have another health condition, follow your doctor and religious guidance about fasting. Sleep problems, dizziness or heavy daytime sleepiness are worth checking with a doctor. This page is general information and not medical advice.

Do not skip sleep to do more

Extra worship at night is precious, but short nights for weeks leave you slow and irritable in the day. Protect at least one solid block, and use naps to fill gaps. See sleep after a heavy iftar and sleep after a late Suhoor.

Frequently asked questions

How much sleep do I need during a autumn Ramadan?

Adults still need 7 or more hours a day in total, which you can split across a night block, a Fajr block and a nap.

What is the best sleep schedule in a autumn Ramadan?

Sleep soon after Taraweeh, wake about 45 minutes before Fajr for Suhoor, sleep again after Fajr and nap after Dhuhr if you can.

Is napping during the day allowed while fasting?

Yes. Napping is fine and often helps. Keep it short, 20 to 30 minutes, or 90 minutes if you can complete a full cycle.

How do I stay alert at work while fasting?

Keep a steady wake time, get daylight in the morning and use a short nap. Avoid very hard exercise during the fast.

Does the season change how I should plan sleep?

Yes. Day length changes the fasting hours and the length of the night, so re run the calculator with your local prayer times.

How do I wake up for Suhoor and Fajr without missing sleep?

Go to bed as early as your evening allows, use one alarm aligned to the end of a 90 minute cycle and plan a short catch up nap later in the day. Our Ramadan sleep planner shows the schedule.

Is jet lag worse flying east or west?

Eastward travel is usually harder because you must fall asleep earlier than your body clock wants. Westward travel asks you to stay up later, which is generally easier.

Is 8 hours too much sleep?

Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.
