Singapore commute and work sleep planner
Work out your latest alarm from the time you must arrive, your travel time and getting ready, then count back in 90 minute cycles. For most adults, five cycles gives 7.5 hours.
Enter your start time and the length of your commute. The planner keeps a 15 minute buffer so a delayed train does not wreck the morning.
Why commute time decides your bedtime
Travel in Singapore ranges from a short walk to a long journey across the island with a transfer. That difference changes the alarm by an hour or more, and so it changes the bedtime. People often plan sleep from the time they wake up but forget that the alarm has to leave room for the whole morning.
| Commute | Getting ready | Alarm | Lights out for 7.5 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 minutes | 45 minutes | 7:40 AM | 11:55 PM |
| 45 minutes | 45 minutes | 7:15 AM | 11:30 PM |
| 60 minutes | 45 minutes | 7:00 AM | 11:15 PM |
| 90 minutes | 45 minutes | 6:30 AM | 10:45 PM |
Each row includes a 15 minute buffer and 15 minutes to fall asleep. If you fall asleep faster or slower, change the setting in the planner.
Shifts, late meetings and calls with other time zones
Some teams work with colleagues in Europe or the United States, which can push calls into the evening or the early morning. Keep the wake up time as steady as you can and protect the first half of the night. For rotating shifts use the shift work sleep calculator. After a long flight use the jet lag calculator.
Make the commute work for sleep
- Lay out clothes and pack the bag before bed so the morning needs fewer minutes.
- Use morning light on the walk to the station. Daylight sets the body clock.
- Do not sleep through the whole commute if it makes the night harder, but a 15 to 20 minute doze is fine.
- Keep caffeine for the earlier part of the day.
- If you work late, keep the wake time and add a short nap before 3 PM. See the nap calculator.
This page is general education and not medical advice. If you snore loudly with pauses in breathing, or stay very sleepy during the day for weeks, speak to a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
What time should I sleep if I start work at 9 AM?
With a 45 minute commute and 45 minutes to get ready, an alarm near 7:15 AM and lights out near 11:30 PM gives 7.5 hours.
How do I include my commute in the bedtime calculation?
Subtract the commute, getting ready time and a buffer from your start time to get the alarm, then count back 90 minute cycles.
Is 6 hours of sleep enough for work?
It is below the 7 or more hours recommended for adults. Occasional short nights happen, but regular ones build sleep debt.
Can I sleep on the MRT instead?
A short doze is fine, but it does not replace night sleep and can be light and broken.
What if I take calls late at night?
Keep the morning alarm steady, protect the first cycles of the night and use a short nap before 3 PM if needed.
Is 8 hours too much sleep?
Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.
Does a consistent sleep schedule really matter?
Yes. A regular sleep and wake time supports your body clock, which can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up. Large gaps between weekday and weekend times can leave you feeling jet lagged on Monday.
Will waking at the end of a cycle remove morning grogginess?
It can help some people, because waking from light sleep is usually easier than waking from deep sleep. The effect is not guaranteed. Grogginess, known as sleep inertia, usually fades within 15 to 30 minutes and also depends on how much sleep you had and when you wake in your body clock.
