Baby wake window calculator

Pick your baby age and the morning wake up time. The tool shows a common wake window range, the usual number of naps and an example day.

What is a wake window?

A wake window is how long a baby can stay awake comfortably between sleeps. Newborns can manage under an hour, and the window grows as sleep pressure builds more slowly with age. A baby who is kept awake too long can become overtired and fight sleep. A baby who is put down too early may not be tired enough to settle.

These ranges are commonly used in baby sleep guidance. They are not a medical standard, and healthy babies vary. Total sleep guidance comes from the CDC: 12 to 16 hours for ages 4 to 12 months and 11 to 14 hours for ages 1 to 2, including naps.

Safe sleep comes first

A schedule never replaces safe sleep practice. Place babies on their back to sleep, on a firm, flat sleep surface, with no loose blankets, pillows or soft toys. Ask your pediatrician or local health service for current guidance for your baby. See also the baby sleep calculator and how much sleep a baby needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a baby be awake between naps?

It depends on age. Commonly suggested wake windows grow from 35 to 60 minutes for a newborn to about 2 to 3 hours at 6 to 7 months and about 3 to 4 hours around a year.

How many naps does a 6 month old need?

Many 6 month olds take about three naps a day, with wake windows of roughly 2 to 3 hours. Babies differ, so follow sleepy cues as well as the clock.

What happens if my baby stays awake too long?

A baby who is awake past their window can become overtired, which often makes settling and staying asleep harder. Shortening the next wake window slightly usually helps.

When do babies drop to two naps?

Many babies move from three naps to two between about 6 and 9 months, and from two naps to one between about 12 and 18 months. The timing varies.

What is the safest way for a baby to sleep?

Follow safe sleep guidance from your pediatrician or health service: baby on their back, on a firm flat sleep surface, with no loose bedding. Sleep calculators give time estimates only and do not replace safe sleep advice.

How can I wake up without an alarm?

A consistent wake time, enough total sleep and morning daylight make natural waking more likely over a few weeks. Many people still wake up slightly before or after their target, so keep a backup alarm for important days.

Is 8 hours too much sleep?

Eight hours sits inside the normal range. If you regularly need 10 or more hours and still feel unrefreshed, mention it to a doctor, because it can be linked with health conditions, medicines or poor quality sleep.

How do I move my bedtime earlier?

Shift it by 15 to 30 minutes every two or three days while keeping the wake time fixed, get bright light after waking and dim lights for an hour before bed.
