The IPL Sleep Study You Should Know About
In 2019, AIIMS Delhi researchers tracked sleep patterns of urban Indian adults before, during, and after the IPL season. Average sleep duration dropped by 43 minutes per night during the tournament. Multiplied across 50 to 60 match days over two months, the cumulative sleep debt exceeds 35 hours for the typical urban IPL viewer. The combination of late finishes, post-match social media, and the emotional intensity of T20 cricket creates chronic partial sleep deprivation across the season.
For a 7 AM alarm: a match ending at 11:30 PM plus 15 minutes of wind-down puts bedtime at 11:45 PM, producing 7 hours and 15 minutes. That is below the 7.5-hour optimal but above the 7-hour minimum for one night per week. The problem starts with consecutive late nights during playoff weeks when matches run back to back.
The Double-Header Problem
During the group stage, IPL runs matches on consecutive days. Two consecutive late nights compound into measurable cognitive deficit by the third day. The practical solution is pre-deciding which matches to watch live. One live weeknight match per week is sustainable. Two consecutive weeknight matches followed by playoff week is not.
UK and Australian Fans
UK fans face 2 to 4 AM finish times for live matches. Recorded highlights the following morning is the only sustainable weeknight approach. Australian fans in AEST have the most manageable window with most matches starting in the afternoon local time.
- 1Pre-decide which matches you watch live each week. One live weeknight match is sustainable. Four is not.
- 2Be in bed within 30 minutes of the final over on live match nights.
- 3Do not watch post-match analysis on weeknights. Catch highlights the next morning instead.
- 4Use weekend matches for extended viewing with full recovery sleep available after.
- 5Finals week: plan accordingly and clear the morning after if possible.
